Butchers, Fish & Game Dealers
According to Whyte’s Directory, in 1847 there were 24 butchers in Berwick, 3 in Spittal and 5 in Tweedmouth. Berwick also had 5 fishmongers and merchants .
Today, Berwick still has three traditional family butchers’ shops, while many much larger towns in the UK have none.
Although there are no fishmongers in the town centre today, fresh and smoked fish and shell-fish are available from a retail unit on the industrial estate at the north end of Berwick, as well as from a van that attends the twice-weekly market in Marygate.
Shell-fish can also be bought direct from the Berwick Shellfish Company on Dock Road, Tweedmouth.
